Organisational Welfare Initiatives

Since its inception, SONIC has implemented numerous welfare programmes aimed at improving the quality of life of people in the community. These initiatives were carried out in collaboration with various donors, companies, and corporate partners. The major programmes implemented include:

  1. Responsible Drinking Campaign: In the present social environment, the message “Say No to Alcohol” is often met with resistance, while the trend of consuming “more drinks” has become increasingly normalized. Many individuals take alcoholic beverages at any time and in any place, without awareness of the harmful effects of excessive drinking. To address this growing concern, SONIC, in collaboration with SABMiller India, organized a comprehensive Responsible Drinking Campaign across the entire Puducherry region. The initiative was strategically designed to engage youth, drivers, and the general public who are habituated to regular alcohol consumption.Various communication and outreach methods were employed—such as street plays, wall writings, posters, handouts, and exhibitions—to educate people about safe drinking practices and the long-term consequences of alcohol misuse. The campaign was well received, and its objectives resonated strongly with the community.

  2. HIV intervention among truck drivers in Pondicherry:  SONIC, with support from SABMiller India, implemented HIV/AIDS intervention programmes in Puducherry targeting long-distance truck drivers, a group highly vulnerable due to their mobile work nature. Awareness sessions were conducted at major truck halt points to educate drivers about HIV prevention, safe sex practices, and the importance of consistent condom use. Free condoms were distributed, and condom booths were set up for easy access. Post-intervention assessments showed significant improvement in the drivers’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices, indicating a positive behavioural shift toward HIV and STI prevention. (detail report)
  3. World AIDS day observations: SONIC observes World AIDS Day annually on 1st December by organizing programmes that promote awareness, solidarity with people living with HIV, and remembrance of those who have passed away. Activities are aligned with the official WAD theme each year and clearly communicated to participants. Trained volunteers support people living with HIV by helping them cope with stress, stigma, and discrimination, while encouraging better quality of life and adherence to ART treatment. (detail report)
  4. Nutrition programmes to the HIV infected children in Villupuram and Cuddalore district: SONIC implemented dedicated nutrition programmes for HIV-infected children in the Villupuram and Cuddalore districts. The initiative focused on providing regular nutritional supplements, health monitoring, and counselling support to improve the overall health, immunity, and well-being of affected children. These programmes played a vital role in reducing malnutrition, enhancing treatment adherence, and strengthening the physical and emotional resilience of the children.
  5. No hungry child programme: The No Hungry Child Programme is an initiative aimed at ensuring that every vulnerable and underprivileged child receives adequate nutrition for healthy growth and development. Through this programme, SONIC identifies children from low-income, marginalized, and HIV-affected families and provides them with regular nutritious food support, essential supplements, and health monitoring. The programme focuses on eliminating child hunger, preventing malnutrition, and improving overall well-being. By addressing nutritional needs, No Hungry Child helps children stay healthy, attend school regularly, and build a stronger foundation for their future.
